Every Missionary Associate who is going on the field through Assemblies of God World Missions is required to attend Pre-Field Orientation. It’s an 8 day training full of sessions designed to give you all the information that you need to make it out there in the wild world. Dave, Samuel, and I attended PFO from March 15-23rd, and to be honest, we were kind of dreading it. We had been to plenty of church conferences before, and we kind of invisioned this one to be full of red tape. Lucky for us, overall, we were dead wrong. We needed a bit of an attitude adjustment.
It was truely amazing to be with so many people who are passionate about missions. Some, like us, had already visited the place they are going. Others were assigned a place to go. All of us, however, are excited about where God is sending us. We learned so much during our training about the reasons why AGWM has specific policies about specific things. We learned who to contact about filing income taxes when you live out of the country. We learned how much bleach to use when disinfecting our fruits and veggies. The most important thing we learned, however, is that we are not alone. There are many others across the USA who are preparing to leave just like us. It was so nice to be able to talk with them about newsletters, fundraising, packing and all the other details that are filling up our lives these days.
It’s kind of strange being home now after being gone for most of the month. Tomorrow Dave goes to the lawyer to sign the papers and close on our house. Things are becomming very official around here and soon we will be official residents of Niger. I can’t wait.
