[Zarma for fried dough]

I have to let you in on a little secret.  We often feed our children funnel cake for breakfast.  Please don’t hate me.  Some mornings (who am I kidding?…) MANY mornings, it’s just too good and easy to pass up.

Every morning here in Niamey, you see women sitting on the side of the road with big metal cookers in front of them filled with boiling oil.  They dip their spoon into a plastic bowl or tub with the batter and drop it into the hot oil.  Donuts.  Funnel cakes.  mmmmm.  It has that wonderful smell of hot grease.

We dip ours in sugar.  The locals use a sauce made of oil and tomatoes.

Living in Niger, we miss our favorite American “fast foods.”  This is one Nigerien fast food we may just miss in America.

I totally miss that food too!! Tried to make it here, but it wasn’t the same. Some foods just taste better with a little bit of Niger in them.
I’ve finally been able to copy cat Halima’s tortillas with my whole wheat flour, and I’ve found recipes for some of my favorite dishes at Le Gourmet. But the other African dishes? Nothing tastes quite right. I miss it.
